Biography
Dr. Shin received his B.S. degree from Department of Electrical Engineering, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, in 1996 with early completion honors and the M.S. degree from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1997. He received the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, in 2004. Upon his graduation, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, The University of South Carolina as an Assistant Professor. He is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure as of January 1, 2011.
Dr. Shin is building his research group- Power IT (Information Technology) Research Group characterized by applications of cutting-edge information technology such as signal processing and communication theory to the future electric power transmission & distribution systems, i.e., smart grid in order to resolve power quality and reliability problems associated with renewable energy resources. Furthermore, Dr. Shin's research interests are being extended to a wide variety of important transient and nonlinear problems in science and engineering such as condition based maintenance of aircraft. His research is being sponsored by National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry University Cooperative Research (I/UCRC), GRid-connected Advanced Power Electronic Systems (GRAPE) center, US Office of Naval Research (ONR) Electric Ship Research & Development Consortium (ESRDC), DoD/US Army Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) research center and US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
