EE Student Profile:
Herney Gonzalez

EE Senior Herney Gonzalez is able to say he’s from “two Columbias”. He was born in Colombia, South America, where, as a child, he dreamed of becoming an electrical engineer after watching his father work with wires, lights, electrical equipment, and seeing books about electricity around his house. Herney and his family left South America when he was 18, and he lived in London where he learned English before coming to the United States.

Herney’s arrival in Columbia, SC, came when he transferred from Spartanburg Community College, having received an Associate’s degree there in Industrial Electronics. When asked about USC, Herney said, “At USC I appreciate learning electrical engineering theory as well as having the opportunity to become knowledgeable in design, and be able to improve, and modify an electrical system.”

Herney has made a big contribution to our EE Department by working in our EE labs and being a part of various volunteer and recruitment efforts in the department. Always ready with a smile, Herney said he is looking forward to a summer internship next year at the Eaton Corporation before he graduates in December 2009 and leaves Columbia again.
