Abstract:
The Navy is interested in the implementation of DC Zonal electric distribution system (DC ZEDS) for surface warships. The DC ZEDS is a multi-converter system which includes power generators, DC-DC, AC-DC and DC-AC power converters and controllers. Researchers are investigating the issues of dynamics, stability and control inherent to these complex systems. In addressing these issues they are faced with additional challenges of providing high efficiency and survivability while reducing the weight of the system. Digital control is one way to meet these criteria in a multi-converter system. The Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is an emerging control implementation platform in the field of digital control in power electronic systems. In this work, the series and parallel combination of two DC-DC converters are analyzed and modeled. FPGA-based controllers are designed for the stand alone, cascaded and paralleled converters.
